San Diego City Councilmember Marni von Wilpert (D) is projected to win California's 48th Congressional District, according to Decision Desk HQ, defeating San Diego County Supervisor Jim Desmond (R) and taking over the seat vacated by outgoing Rep. Darrell Issa (R).
With 64% of the vote counted as of Tuesday night, von Wilpert led Desmond by nearly 19 points—59.4% to 40.6%—a margin that underscored the district's Democratic lean, as noted by the Cook Political Report.
Von Wilpert's campaign centered on pocketbook issues, stricter gun laws, and accountability for Immigration and Customs Enforcement. She also pledged to push for immigration reform, including a pathway to citizenship for "hardworking long-term residents and Dreamers who have grown up here as Americans," according to her campaign website.
A self-described "proud member" of the LGBTQ community, von Wilpert campaigned on protecting LGBTQ rights. Her background includes work as a civil rights attorney and providing legal aid to people living with HIV and AIDS through a free clinic in Mississippi, as reported by The San Diego Union-Tribune.
Von Wilpert first won a seat on the San Diego City Council in 2020 and ran unopposed in 2024. The district spans parts of San Diego and Riverside counties, including cities such as Murrieta, Costa Mesa, Laguna Niguel, and portions of Aliso Viejo and Santa Ana.
The 48th has been a Republican stronghold for decades, with Democrat Harley Rouda's 2018 victory being a notable exception. Republican Michelle Steel reclaimed it in 2020, and after redistricting, Issa won it in 2022. Issa announced in March that he would not seek reelection, leaving the seat open.
Von Wilpert's win is part of a broader Democratic push in the House, with Arizona's 6th District flipping and other gains reported. Her victory adds to the party's momentum, though control of the chamber remains uncertain.
