Former Democratic Rep. Ben McAdams is projected to win the race for Utah's 1st Congressional District, according to Decision Desk HQ, flipping a seat that had been held by Republicans and adding to the Democratic wave in the House.

McAdams defeated Republican nominee Riley Owen in the contest to replace outgoing GOP Rep. Blake Moore, who chose to run in the state's 2nd District after redistricting made his old seat more favorable to Democrats. The projection came at 10 p.m. EST, as returns showed McAdams with a decisive lead.

Johnson steps aside as GOP minority leader race heats up
Speaker Mike Johnson told GOP staff he won't seek the minority leader post, opening the door for Scalise and Jordan to battle for the party's direction.

McAdams, who previously represented Utah's 4th District from 2019 to 2021, becomes the only Democrat in Utah's congressional delegation. He lost his seat in 2020 to Republican Rep. Burgess Owens, but his return marks a significant pickup for Democrats as they seek to retake control of the House.

The moderate Democrat campaigned on a platform focused on lowering everyday costs, protecting public lands, defending human rights, and increasing oversight of President Trump's immigration enforcement operations. His appeal to moderate voters in a traditionally conservative state proved effective in a district that had been redrawn to be more competitive.

Before his political career, McAdams worked as a lawyer in Salt Lake City and served as a senior adviser to former Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker. His background in local governance and legal expertise helped him connect with voters on issues like public lands and government accountability.

McAdams' campaign drew support from several national organizations, including the Human Rights Campaign, the American Federation of Government Employees, Moms Demand Action, Defend the Vote, and the New Democrat Coalition Action Fund. This backing underscored his appeal to both progressive and centrist donors, as well as his focus on issues like gun safety and LGBTQ rights.

The victory is part of a broader Democratic surge, with the party also flipping the Wisconsin governor's race and making gains in key House districts across the country. McAdams' win in Utah, a state that has trended Republican in recent years, signals that Democrats are expanding their map and competing in previously safe GOP territory.

With this seat, Democrats move closer to solidifying their House majority, which will set up a clash with President Trump over legislative priorities. McAdams' return to Washington is expected to bolster the party's moderate wing, providing a voice for pragmatic governance in a chamber that has grown increasingly polarized.
