Democratic strategist James Carville leveled a stark assessment of President Trump's condition on Monday, claiming the commander-in-chief is experiencing rapid mental deterioration as he navigates escalating tensions with Iran and crafts his public messaging.
The comments came during an appearance on MSNBC's "The Beat," following Trump's national addresses outlining military objectives against Iran and his announcement of a two-week pause in strikes amid a developing ceasefire. "You could just look at the guy as an average person and say, 'This man is deteriorating at a really rapid rate,'" Carville stated.
Conservative Media Fractures Over Iran Policy
Carville pointed to visible fractures within typically pro-Trump media circles as evidence of broader instability. "Alex Jones sees it, you can see it all over the right. Got Megyn Kelly and Tucker fighting with Mark Levin. I can't even keep track of all of them. They hate each other when they hate us," he added, referencing the internal conflicts.
Indeed, prominent conservative voices have broken with the administration's approach. Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, along with former Fox News hosts Megyn Kelly and Tucker Carlson, have argued Trump was pressured into launching strikes and have urged de-escalation, condemning his threat to target civilian infrastructure as potentially illegal.
Jones, typically a Trump supporter, grew increasingly critical following the president's threat to bomb "a whole civilization" in Iran if demands weren't met. "That is the definition of genocide," Jones said in a video posted on X last week. "Not a war. Not a defensive war but a literal bombardment." He lamented the damage to America's global standing, stating, "America is sinking in global rankings, likability. It's just not what we voted for."
A Defense From the Right
Not all conservative commentators have turned critical. Mark Levin has vigorously defended Trump's decision to strike Iran, arguing the president acted independently without influence from Israel or other external forces. Levin attacked former National Counterterrorism Center Director Joe Kent for resigning over claims of Israeli influence and labeled Representative Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) a "jew hater" for opposing funding for Israel's Iron Dome missile defense system.
Levin has also targeted media coverage of the dissent, writing on X, "The media continue to promote this lunatic Carlson because they can pretend they're reporting news when they're trashing POTUS."
The president's 'civilization' ultimatum to Iran has drawn bipartisan backlash, creating rare divisions within his base and raising questions about the administration's strategic coherence. With the two-week pause now in effect, the ultimate plan remains unclear, leaving allies and adversaries alike guessing at Washington's next move.
The internal GOP strife extends beyond media personalities, as Trump's 'civilization' ultimatum to Iran splits the GOP more broadly, with some lawmakers urging de-escalation while others back a hardline stance. The controversy has even prompted calls from Democratic leaders, including Speaker Pelosi, for cabinet members to consider invoking the 25th Amendment over the president's threats.
